What Claude Cowork does

The difference from a normal chat is that Claude Cowork doesn’t answer once and wait for the next question: you hand it a full task and it runs through it on its own, step by step, inside a working folder. It can read every file in that folder, write new ones, edit the ones that already exist, and work with connected apps like Slack or Google Drive to gather information before producing the deliverable. The output isn’t loose text in a chat window, it’s a document, spreadsheet or presentation you can open and use directly, with citations pointing to which file or message each claim came from.

At Galileo14 we run it daily for tasks we used to piece together by hand in Claude Code or in a separate chat: a weekly report built from several sources, a review of a client’s document folder returned as a structured summary, a first draft of a proposal with the numbers already loaded into the project. You launch the task, switch to something else or head to a meeting, and the work keeps running in the background; closing the app stops it, unless you’re on the cloud sessions in beta for the Max plan.

What Claude Cowork is and what it costs

Explaining what Claude Cowork is also means talking about access, because it isn’t a separate product with its own price. It ships inside the paid plans of Claude: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, on both macOS and Windows. It isn’t available on the free plan. In July 2026 Anthropic also brought it to web and mobile in beta, starting with the Max plan, with cloud sessions that keep running after the computer is closed and can be reviewed from a phone.

Is Claude different from Cowork?

Claude is the model: the system that understands natural language and generates responses, available as a web chat, a mobile app, or an API. Claude Cowork is one of the ways to access that same model, with file permissions, connections to outside apps, and the ability to run multi-step tasks without constant supervision. Is Claude Cowork worth it?

If the question is whether Claude Cowork is worth it, it depends on the type of task, not on the product in general. For one-off, short requests, a normal chat is still faster: you ask, you read the answer, and that’s the end of it. Cowork earns its keep when the task has several steps, touches several files or apps, and what’s needed is a finished deliverable rather than a chat reply. In our experience with clients, the clear case is the recurring task: the same report every week, the same folder review every month. That’s where running in the background and reviewing from a phone (in beta today for the Max plan) save time. For a one-off question, Cowork is still overkill.
